Ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics games slated to hold in the Republic of Korea, from 9th – 25th February, the Korean Cultural Centre (KCC) Nigeria has organized a six -week K-Pop Dance Academy in Abuja to train young talented Nigerians on different K-Pop-dance basics and routines in the spirit of the games.

The 6-week K-Pop Dance Academy which held at the Korean Cultural Centre Abuja had two K-Pop experts from Korea on ground to train participants on different K-Pop-dance basics and had about 31 young Nigerians participating.

The K-POP Academy which is an annual event had this year’s theme as Pyeonchang Winter Olympic Games. Meanwhile, the Winter games is expected to last for 17 days and will be hosted in Pyeonchang, Gangwon Province in South Korea.

This year’s K-Pop Dance Academy in Nigeria served to also promote awareness for the games slated for next year.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the end of the Academy, the Korean Cultural Centre Director in Nigeria, Mr. Han Sungrae said the enthusiasm shown by Nigerian youth towards Korean culture and music was overwhelming.

He described the Nigerian youth as being competitive in all spheres saying he was not surprised at their performance in the global K-Pop Dance event adding that the Centre will continue to sponsor programmes that will sharpen the creativity of the Nigerian youth.
The Director also announced that Korea was ready to host the world.

On her part, one of the K-POP instructors from Korea, You Hye Jin expressed satisfaction with the performance of participants at the Academy.

She further disclosed her love for Nigerian music and culture saying there were a lot of similarities in the cultures of the two countries.

Next year’s Winter Olympic Games will be held in Korea for the first time in 30 years after the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988. Pyeongchang will be the stage for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and most snow sports. Athletes taking part in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games will compete in 102 events in 15 sport disciplines.

The Games will be the first ever Olympic Winter Games with over 100 gold medals. In particular, 6 new events such as Snowboard Big Air, Speed Skating Mass Start, Curling Mixed Doubles, Alpine Skiing Team event will be added to the programme. PyeongChang 2018 will also be the stage for the greatest number of women’s and mixed events in the history of Olympic Winter Games.
