According to Yerima Shettima, who pronounced his opinion on the 23d of August, 2017, the referendum could be the only solution, and the government of Nigeria should let Igbos leave Nigeria if the referendum will show that this decision is the weal of the majority. The referendum, as per his opinion, is also the way to show the real attitude of all Igbos to the situation and their willingness either to be a part of Nigeria or to choose their path.
The national president of the AYCF said that our country tried to manage its unity since the time of its independence and he wonders how long it will continue.
The main thing is that he considers referendum as the only way to avoid civil war in Nigeria, by solving the situation with agitations peacefully. According to him, Nigeria couldn’t afford another civil war.
Alhaji Yerima Shettima had earlier urged in Gombe President Muhammadu Buhari to consider the referendum as a tool that could officially open the door for those who don’t see the future of Biafra as a part of Nigeria. The national president of the AYCF stated that the focus of the President was mainly on the fact that the whole situation was threating to the national unity in Nigeria. On the one side Yerima Shettima agrees with the position of the President, but on the other hand, he feels that on the side of international law, Nigeria government is expected to create exit door for those who want to part from the country through a referendum. This is prescribed in the 1999 constitution.
He also forecasted that if the government continues to insist on the living with people who do not want to be a part of Nigeria, the threatening the unity of the country will continue to exist. So, again he tried to stress on the only possible peaceful solution of the situation.
Although Yerima Shettima is both hands for the referendum, he admits that IPOB shouldn’t be considered as the voice of South-East because they are less than 10% of the Igbo community in Nigeria, who are willing to stay in the country.
Yerima Shettima admitted that the position of the northern youths had been misunderstood and misquoted. The young people were not calling for violence, and their real position was misquoted by mischief-makers.
